Don't stop the music
Mortali Bändi continues its slow but (not) sure path to the fame. After one rough year of practicing several covers from different bands, we decided to move into the studio, in order to start familiarizing with the basic aspects of recording.
Last Wednesday was the first time ever. We spent most of the time getting to know the equipment and how to use the software in the studio (Logic Pro). Marc was familiarizing with the electric drums which are, by the way, for right-handed people (whereas Marc is left-handed).
The song we are trying to record these days is Vihreän Joen Rannalla, from the Finnish band Eppu Normaali. That is the first song we ever tried to play, so we've been playing it for over a year. Still, you couldn't imaging how difficult was to follow the metronome and produce something reasonable out of our instruments.
It is worth to say that Roca, the bassist, is one of the revelations of the band. He had not a single notion of music theory, yet he is capable of playing at a moderate pace and keep up with the rhythm (a thing that seemed almost impossible the first days).
Open to the future is the question about our creativity. We have started to train in a different way. Instead of playing a known set of covers, we start off by playing random stuff, like in a jam, and so we have found several rhythms and patterns that could serve as the base for Mortali Bändi's first songs. For now, Mortali Bändi will have a little break until June, and then we will see how our music evolves. Hopefully, we can gift the crowd with our first gig after the summer.
Mortali Bandi
Mortali Bändi es el nombre temporal del grupo musical que hemos formado varios colegas de la zona de Espoo (aquí en Finland). La proposición la hicieron Marc (batería) y Gerard (guitarra), cuando un día me comentaron que estaría bien quedar para tocar de vez en cuando, y, por tanto, comprarnos instrumentos (tales como una batería eléctrica) para poder ensayar en casa o donde fuese posible.
Nuestra suerte llegó cuando Jens (cantante), un colega finés amigo de Marc, nos comentó que sabía de un local de ensayo que era gratuito y al que él tenía acceso, por ser miembro de una hermandad ortodoxa (en una iglesia de Kauniainen, una barriada de Espoo). En el local de ensayo hay ya una batería Pearl, un bajo, varios amplificadores (incluyendo un Peavy de válvulas guapísimo) y una mesa de mezclas. Así que él nos propuso que nosotros tocáramos para él, y él pondría el local, con la condición de que la mayoría de canciones fueran en finés.
Ahora han pasado ya tres semanas y son tres los ensayos que Mortali Bändi ha hecho ya. La verdad es que, con sólo tres ensayos, Mortali Bändi ya es capaz de tocar unas cinco canciones (aunque de forma un poco mediocre aún), lo cual está bastante bien para haber ensayado unas 10 horas en total. Por cierto, el nombre de Mortali Bändi viene del primer ensayo, en el cual Marc (batería) cogió un teclado que había en el local y probó un efecto de sonido que se usa en los efectos del juego Mortal Kombat, y de ahí se nos ocurrió la idea, a modo de cachondeo, de ponernos Mortali Bändi, al menos hasta que encontrásemos algo mejor.
