Canon EOS 550D on the way

As I mentioned in a previous post, I was thinking of buying a new digital camera (a real one), since my good-old Pentax S4i is been off its duties for quite some time. At first, my candidate was the Canon EOS 500D. However, with the time, I thought that it might be worthy to wait about a month and spend a couple of hundreds more and get the brand new EOS 550D. The main improvements compared to its predecessor are:

  • 18 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor
  • new DIGIC IV processor
  • improved ISO range (100 - 6400)
  • FullHD video recording (1080p, 30fps)
  • 3" LCD with one million dots
  • iFCL metering system (63-zone metering system)
  • extended exposure compensation +/-5 stops
  • external microphone socket

The EOS 550D was supposed to be released in April 2010. However, today I saw an advertisement at Rajala Pro Shop (a very good shop in Helsinki), that this camera would be available in two weeks. Right away, I called the shop and, upon confirmation, I decided to book it online.

This is the first time I am going to possess a dSLR, so I better get studying about how to use such a good camera. The nice thing about Rajala Pro Shop is that the price of the camera (849€ currently) includes a basic lens kit (the Canon EF-S IS 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6) plus a basic course about how to use the camera (in the shop's indoor labs). This is really a nice thing, since you can justify the purchase of such a good camera, thanks to the course included in the price.

Now I will have to wait a couple of weeks (in the meantime I am visiting Lapland, so I hope the time will go fast) and then I should get my little baby. Meanwhile, I will also study my book (Creative Shutter Speed) and other tutorials I have prepared.
